Roulette co-founder Jim Staley joins longtime collaborators Ikue Mori and Zeena Parkins for an evening of free improvisation at the venue he helped build.
Jim Staley spent 45 years as Artistic Director of Roulette before stepping back to the board — which makes his return to the stage here something of an occasion. The trio he's assembled is drawn from decades of shared work: Ikue Mori, whose path from no-wave drumming to laptop improvisation has made her one of the more singular voices in experimental music, and Zeena Parkins, who has spent her career systematically dismantling what a harp can be expected to do. Trombone, electronics, harp, and more electronics: the instrumentation alone suggests a set that will move between texture and gesture, quiet accumulation and sudden disruption. These are players who have been in rooms together long enough that the improvisation should feel earned rather than exploratory in the tentative sense.
