World premiere of Zorn's four-year piano concerto project, performed by Brian Marsella, Jorge Roeder, and Ches Smith with vibraphonist Sae Hashimoto.
Composed between 2020 and 2024, Alea Iacta Est — the die is cast — is a substantial new piano concerto from John Zorn, receiving its world premiere at Roulette. The piece moves across a wide range of moods, styles, and tempi, with the core trio of Brian Marsella, Jorge Roeder, and Ches Smith joined by Sae Hashimoto on vibraphone for one movement. Zorn has long worked with interpreters who understand the internal logic of his systems; this lineup — Marsella at the piano, Roeder on bass, Smith on drums — represents some of the most fluent voices in that tradition. A world premiere of a four-year composition is a real event.
